Madison Zine Fest Seeks Summer Intern

The Wisconsin Book Festival sent us the following announcement in hopes a UW creative writer might be interested in this internship.

About the Madison Zine Fest

The Madison Zine Fest is an annual zine event held in conjunction with the Wisconsin Book Festival in downtown Madison. MZF involves local and national zine creators, readers, researchers, and other experts who educate, inform, and draw others into the zine scene. MZF creates increased communication and builds community between many different producers of independent media. The fest helps people to share skills and information related to zines and zine culture. Through hands-on, discussion-based events, the fest includes workshops, panel discussions, a zine fair, and zine readings. Admission to the fest is free and open to the public.

The Wisconsin Book Festival is the state's largest literary festival, and one of the largest in the nation, with approximately 15,000 annual attendees. This unique event inspires book lovers from across the region to spend a weekend in downtown Madison and transforms State Street into a vast, public literary salon. The Wisconsin Book Festival is a high-energy, high-profile, public literary arts and humanities program that makes an impressive cultural and economic impact each year.

Intern duties

• Communicate with zine publishers, presenters, and venue staff to develop and coordinate workshops, panel discussions and zine fair
• Publicize Zine Fest through flyers, social media, print media and outreach to campus and community
• Recruit and organize volunteers to assist with presenting Zine Fest
• Evaluate impact of Zine Fest and suggest improvements and changes for next year

Qualities we are seeking in an intern
• Experience planning events is preferred but not required
• Must be interested in zines and self-publishing
• Knowledge of local and national zine scene helpful
• Major in library science, English or journalism preferred
• Must be detail-oriented

Timeline and time commitment

The Wisconsin Book Festival and Madison Zine Fest will be held September 29 through October 3, 2010

Internship will run from May 10 through October 10, 2010. Dates are flexible depending on student’s schedule. Workload is expected to be 5 hours per week, more hours will be required during and immediately before Zine Fest.

This is an unpaid internship. If college credit is desired, we will work with you to arrange credit through your program of study.
